The Anambra State Police Command has increased security operations around schools and other strategic locations across the state as students return for the new academic session.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this on Thursday, saying the operation is being carried out under the Inspector-General of Police’s Safe School Initiative.
He said the exercise is being coordinated by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo.
According to Ikenga, police officers, sister security agencies and other relevant stakeholders have been deployed to designated schools and strategic locations across the state.
He said the deployment is intended to improve security around schools, educate pupils and students on personal safety and security awareness, and assist children when crossing roads.
The operation is also expected to provide other policing services needed to maintain a secure and suitable environment for learning.
Ikenga said the command was using the exercise to strengthen cooperation between the police, school authorities, teachers, parents, guardians, host communities and other stakeholders.
He said the collaboration would help in identifying potential threats early, preventing incidents and ensuring quicker responses to security concerns around schools.
Personnel deployed to the schools have been instructed to maintain a visible presence, monitor activities within and around school premises and assist pupils and students, particularly during peak arrival and closing periods.
They have also been directed to respond promptly to security-related concerns.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting children, teachers, school authorities and other members of the school community.
He urged school administrators, parents, guardians and students to remain alert and report suspicious individuals, activities or emerging security threats to the police or other relevant security agencies.
