The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has suspended its strike after the Kaduna State Government approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement for academic staff at the institution.
The union announced the suspension in a statement issued after its congress held at the 1,000-seater auditorium of Kaduna State University.
The statement, signed by KASU-ASUU Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, said implementation of the agreement would begin in October 2026.
The union also disclosed that the university’s Governing Council and Management had approved the payment of nine months of outstanding arrears covering January to September 2026.
According to ASUU, the decisions followed discussions involving the union, the Kaduna State Government, KASU Governing Council and the university management over the implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.
The discussions particularly focused on the new conditions of service for academic staff in Nigerian universities.
The union said the approvals would help improve staff welfare and contribute to stability, retention and productivity at the university.
Following the government’s approval, the KASU-ASUU congress unanimously agreed to suspend the industrial action from 12:01am on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The union commended Kaduna State Governor and Visitor to KASU for approving the implementation of the agreement, saying the decision demonstrated attention to the welfare of academic staff and the development of the institution.
It also praised members of the government negotiation team for their commitment and response to the issues raised during the negotiations.
ASUU-KASU further acknowledged the university management for supplying relevant documents and information that helped in resolving the dispute.
The union said the government and university management maintained patience, restraint and respect for due process throughout the strike.
It noted that neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation, adding that it was allowed to follow its established procedures for both declaring and suspending the industrial action.
The lecturers described the approach as an example of constructive engagement and healthy industrial relations.
With the suspension of the strike, the union said it was prepared to receive students back into the classrooms.
It also thanked students, stakeholders and members of the public for their patience and support throughout the dispute.
The statement ended with the union’s slogan: “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta.”
