Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup of his career.
The 41-year-old made the announcement ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, saying he wants to enjoy every moment of the tournament.
Ronaldo says he has no regrets about his international career, insisting he has given everything to football and will retire with a clear conscience whenever the time comes.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner says his motivation to keep playing is driven by passion, not by the need to prove anything. He adds that he simply loves the game and is grateful to still be competing at the highest level.
The Portuguese forward has already scored three goals at this year’s World Cup, becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Ronaldo describes the 2026 edition as the most emotionally rewarding World Cup of his career, praising the passion of the fans and the overall experience.
Although he has never won the FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo says his legacy will not be defined by lifting the trophy, adding that age has given him greater maturity and experience.
The Al-Nassr forward also thanked critics for helping shape him into the player and person he has become.
