Eight people have died after a civilian-contracted aircraft crashed at a remote United States Air Force facility in Alaska, the military has confirmed.
The aircraft went down at the airport serving the long-range radar installation in Cape Newenham, located in southwestern Alaska. According to the Alaskan Command, rescue teams who arrived at the scene found no survivors.
The military has not yet released the identities or nationalities of the victims, nor disclosed the purpose of their trip to the radar facility, which is responsible for monitoring aircraft operating within Alaskan airspace.
An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the crash. Authorities said the names of those killed would be made public after their families had been informed.
Alaskan Command chief, Lieutenant General Robert Davis, described the incident as a major loss for the military and surrounding communities.
Davis said the victims were dedicated professionals who were performing an important mission in a challenging environment.
