The Federal Government has warned that it may take additional diplomatic measures if attacks on Nigerians in South Africa continue, following the killing of two Nigerian nationals.
The government condemned the deaths of Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, also known as Big Joe, and demanded thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iroegbu was allegedly tortured to death by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Pretoria, while Joe was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his shop in Mpumalanga.
The ministry described the incidents as part of a disturbing pattern of violence against Nigerians and warned that all options remain under consideration if the attacks and xenophobic behaviour against foreigners are not addressed.
The Federal Government also expressed concern that some South African security operatives, particularly officers of the Tshwane Metro Police, have been linked to previous attacks on Nigerians, while urging South African authorities to ensure justice and guarantee the safety of foreign nationals.
