The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected cloudy weather, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.
In its weather forecast issued in Abuja on Sunday, the agency said the northern region would experience partly cloudy conditions on Monday morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in many areas later in the day.
For the North-Central region, NiMet expects cloudy skies in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall developing later across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau states.
The agency said the southern region would also remain largely cloudy, with light rainfall possible in parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. It added that moderate rainfall would occur intermittently across much of the region later on Monday.
Tuesday forecast
NiMet expects patches of cloud over the northern parts of the country on Tuesday morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall possible in parts of Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba and Adamawa.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected to spread across most parts of the northern region later in the day.
Across the North-Central region, cloudy conditions are expected, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall possible over parts of Benue, Kogi, Plateau and Nasarawa. Isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across the region later in the day.
In the southern states, NiMet forecasts cloudy weather and light rainfall over parts of Ebonyi, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom.
The agency also expects afternoon or evening thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in parts of Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.
Wednesday outlook
For Wednesday, NiMet forecasts partly cloudy conditions across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely over parts of Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe.
More thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected over most parts of the northern region later in the day.
The North-Central region is expected to remain cloudy, with thunderstorms and light rainfall possible over parts of Nasarawa and Plateau in the morning. By the afternoon or evening, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across most parts of the region.
In the South, cloudy skies and intermittent light rainfall are expected over parts of the South-East and coastal areas. NiMet forecasts moderate rainfall across the entire southern region during the afternoon and evening.
NiMet issues safety advice
The weather agency warned that strong winds could occur ahead of thunderstorms in some affected areas.
It advised residents to secure loose objects around their homes and other properties to reduce the risk of damage from strong winds.
NiMet also urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible and advised residents to unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
Members of the public were further advised to keep away from tall trees during storms because of the risk of falling branches or damaged trees.
For the aviation sector, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information and relevant flight documentation to support safe and effective operational planning.
The agency encouraged residents to stay updated by following its regular weather reports and alerts.
