The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy conditions, thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, while warning of possible flooding in some states.
In its weather outlook issued in Abuja, NiMet said parts of the northern region will experience cloudy skies on Wednesday, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in Taraba and Kebbi states.
Later in the day, moderate thunderstorms and rainfall are forecast for parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
For the North Central region, the agency predicted morning thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), followed by more widespread moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
In the South, cloudy weather is expected, with morning rainfall likely in Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states. Moderate rainfall is expected across most southern states later in the day.
On Thursday, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna states, with moderate thunderstorms expected later across Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba.
The North Central region is expected to experience sunny intervals with patches of clouds before morning thunderstorms affect parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue states. Moderate rainfall is expected across the region later in the day.
In the southern states, light morning rain is forecast for Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with continuous rainfall expected across most of the region as the day progresses.
NiMet also warned of a high risk of flooding during the forecast period in Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
On Friday, the agency predicts partly cloudy conditions across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms expected in Taraba and Adamawa states. Moderate rainfall is also forecast later in the day across Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba.
For the North Central region, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states, followed by moderate rainfall across much of the region later in the day.
The southern region is expected to remain cloudy, with moderate rainfall forecast in parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River during the morning before extending to most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms and advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury.
The agency also urged states at risk of flash flooding to activate emergency response measures, while advising airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe flight operations.
Residents were encouraged to monitor official weather updates and follow safety advisories throughout the forecast period.
