Creative entrepreneur and fashion advocate, Olamilekan Afolabi, has urged young Africans to embrace consistency, self-belief, and skill development as essential foundations for success in the creative and fashion industries.
Speaking during a discussion on Trade FM, Afolabi reflected on his early journey as a university student experimenting with creative expression alongside peers, noting that what began as informal experimentation gradually developed into a professional pathway.
He explained that early exposure to design tools and creative communities helped shape his direction, adding that recognition of his work by industry-connected individuals further strengthened his commitment to pursue creativity seriously.
Afolabi emphasized that consistency remains one of the most important drivers of success in fashion and creative entrepreneurship, stating that continuous output and visibility are more valuable than waiting for perfection before sharing work.
He noted that many emerging creatives struggle with self-doubt and external judgment, but stressed that growth in the industry depends on persistence, portfolio development, and the ability to remain active despite uncertainty.
According to him, building a strong portfolio and maintaining a visible presence are critical steps for gaining credibility and attracting opportunities within the fashion and creative sectors.
He also highlighted networking and collaboration as key tools for growth, explaining that relationships within the industry often determine access to clients, opportunities, and long-term sustainability.
Afolabi encouraged young creatives to focus on niche development rather than following trends blindly, adding that while streetwear and fashion trends can provide entry points into the industry, long-term success depends on originality and skill refinement.
He further advised upcoming entrepreneurs to treat creativity as both a lifestyle and a business, noting that pricing, branding, and value perception are shaped by style, quality, and market positioning.
The entrepreneur also shared that success in the creative industry requires resilience, discipline, and the willingness to continuously improve, even in the face of rejection or slow progress.
