Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has predicted that President Bola Tinubu will emerge victorious in the 2027 presidential election, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar finishing second and Peter Obi coming third.
Afegbua made the prediction while discussing the prospects of leading opposition figures during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast.
He described the 2027 presidential contest as primarily a three-way race involving Tinubu, Atiku and Obi, while playing down the chances of other candidates.
According to the commissioner, other contenders, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, are unlikely to pose a serious challenge in the election.
Afegbua questioned Makinde’s presidential ambition on the platform of the Advanced Peoples Movement, APM, and asked about the party’s strength and presence across Nigeria.
He also dismissed Sowore and some other opposition figures, describing them as contenders without sufficient electoral strength to alter the main contest.
Afegbua gave a clear ranking of his expected outcome, saying Atiku Abubakar would finish second, Peter Obi third and President Bola Tinubu first.
The Edo commissioner said his prediction was based on what he described as statistics, research, investigation and empirical assessment of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, including its electoral strengths and weaknesses.
He admitted that the APC had shortcomings in certain areas but said the party was aware of its vulnerable points and was taking steps to improve its position before the 2027 election.
Afegbua also acknowledged that there are states where the APC may face difficulties but maintained that the party remains strong and is putting measures in place to improve its electoral prospects.
