Fresh safety disruptions have hit educational operations in Ijebu-Ode after another reported gas leak forced emergency responses at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage, and Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende, sending several students and staff to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode for medical care.
The latest incident—now the third within two months—has intensified concerns over business continuity risks for affected schools, as repeated closures and medical emergencies begin to disrupt academic schedules and increase unplanned operational costs. Previous episodes reportedly resulted in dozens of hospitalisations, with one affecting about 40 students and another nearly 100, creating recurring pressure on both school administration and local health services.
Authorities had earlier identified methane as the likely source of the emissions following environmental monitoring in the area, raising questions about infrastructure integrity, environmental management, and regulatory oversight. For school operators, the situation introduces potential liabilities, including duty-of-care obligations, possible insurance implications, and reputational risk.
Residents say the latest disruption occurred during school hours when a strong odour triggered panic, breathing difficulties, and fainting spells among students and staff. With several patients still under medical observation, stakeholders are now calling for urgent intervention to restore confidence and prevent further economic and educational disruption in the affected communities.
