Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the board of the African Central Bank, in what officials describe as a major diplomatic and institutional milestone.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, at the close of the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Tuggar said the decision marks a landmark development that underscores Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping Africa’s financial architecture. He noted that the permanent seat will consolidate the country’s leadership in advancing economic integration, peace, security, and democratic governance across the continent.
According to the minister, the decision also extends Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the African Monetary Institute through its Technical Convergence Committee, a key step toward the establishment of the continental central bank.
Tuggar, who is accompanying Vice President Kashim Shettima at the AU meetings, said the development affirms Nigeria’s technical capacity, economic significance, and commitment to Africa’s monetary integration agenda.
In the area of peace and security, the session also witnessed the successful election of candidates endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States to the AU Peace and Security Council. Tuggar said the outcome reflects strong cohesion and unity among ECOWAS member states and their shared commitment to regional stability.
Nigeria also demonstrated leadership in democratic governance by organising a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The event drew ministers and senior officials from across Africa and the international community, fostering dialogue on strengthening democratic institutions and inclusive governance.
The Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirmed that the Federal Government remains committed to working with AU member states and regional bodies to promote economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
