A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared his support for Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, even though he remains a member of a different opposition party.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Momodu said opposition parties should put aside individual and partisan interests and unite behind Adeleke in the interest of defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The former presidential aspirant stressed that he is still a committed member of the ADC and explained that he joined the party because several opposition figures had sought to build a broad coalition against what he described as the APC’s negative impact on the economy, social cohesion, religious tolerance and democratic institutions.
Momodu said he had hoped the opposition coalition would avoid internal rivalry and unnecessary conflicts among its leaders.
He added that he initially believed there was no need to start a new political arrangement, noting that the ADC had previously featured candidates who finished second, third and fourth in the 2023 presidential election.
According to him, the coalition effort did not develop as he had expected, but he has not abandoned the hope that Nigerians will eventually unite against the APC.
The media entrepreneur argued that the current political situation in Osun requires what he called practical common sense rather than rigid party loyalty.
He said that, in his view, the only sensible strategy for opposition forces is to align behind Governor Adeleke, whom he referred to as the Accord Party candidate.
Momodu insisted that his endorsement was not based on friendship or family ties, describing Adeleke as a politician with exceptional popularity.
He also praised the governor’s performance in areas such as infrastructure, health, education, staff welfare, labour relations, internally generated revenue, agriculture, commerce, culture, women empowerment and youth development.
According to him, opposition parties should avoid creating conditions that could make it easier for the APC to influence the outcome of the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election.
Momodu concluded that his support for Adeleke is based on what he sees as the broader strategic interest of the opposition in Osun State rather than the narrow interest of any single political party.
