NIMC arrests illegal NIN operators, confiscates enrolment equipment

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has stepped up its enforcement against illegal National Identification Number, NIN, registration activities, unauthorised modification of personal information and extortion.

The renewed operation has resulted in several arrests in Gwagwalada and other locations, alongside the seizure of equipment allegedly being used for unauthorised NIN enrolment.

The commission disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the operation was conducted by its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit, ICEU.

According to NIMC, the exercise forms part of efforts to eliminate illegal registration practices and protect the security, credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

The commission noted that several difficulties experienced by NIN holders were linked to attempts by individuals to bypass the approved procedures for enrolment and data modification.

It therefore reminded Nigerians that NIN registration must only be carried out at officially approved enrolment centres.

It also clarified that requests to correct or update personal information could be processed through its designated self-service modification platform.

NIMC further advised registered individuals to download the NINAuth application from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to access available security features, print their NIN slips and use other related services.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s firm position against extortion and other unethical practices.

She assured Nigerians and legal residents that the commission remained committed to delivering efficient, accessible and seamless NIN enrolment services.

NIMC urged members of the public to avoid unapproved agents and use only authorised channels when registering for their NIN or requesting changes to their personal information.

The commission also advised citizens to visit its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or follow its verified social media platforms for reliable information and updates on its services.
