A serving officer of the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps, Colonel Abdussalam Ude, was shot dead by gunmen at his residence in the Kurudu area of Abuja on Monday evening.
Sources said the attackers allegedly attempted to abduct the officer or members of his family, but he resisted, leading to a struggle during which both he and his wife were shot. His wife, driver and security guard also sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Colonel Ude, who was from Enugu State, had just returned from work when he reportedly encountered the assailants, raising suspicions that the attack may have been planned.
Military sources described him as a disciplined and professional officer who had served in several key intelligence and counter-terrorism positions within the Armed Forces and was due for promotion next year.
Security agencies have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the attack.
Plateau police arrest three over alleged mob killing of 25-year-old model
The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the death of Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old Jos-based model popularly known as “Ibee.”
Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, was allegedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing a mobile phone.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road, Jos.
According to sources, Mbaya had attended a social event on campus and decided to spend the night at a friend’s residence because it was too late to return to his home in Rayfield.
The following morning, his friend allegedly reported that an iPhone was missing and accused Mbaya, saying they were the only people in the room.
Eyewitnesses said Mbaya initially left the apartment but later returned after receiving a phone call about the missing device. On his return, he was allegedly confronted by his friend and several other young men.
Witnesses claimed the group beat and tortured him for several hours in an attempt to force a confession, using sticks and other objects until he became unconscious.
A nurse was later invited to examine him and reportedly confirmed that he had died. There were also claims that attempts were made to move him to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) before security operatives were informed.
The death has sparked outrage among students, friends and members of Plateau’s fashion and entertainment community, where Mbaya was regarded as a promising rising talent.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Alabo said the command received a report from a Good Samaritan at about 11:20 p.m. on July 26 that some youths had brought an unconscious man to JUTH under suspicious circumstances.
Police officers who responded identified the victim as Ibrahim Mbaya, 25, of Rayfield, Jos, and doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Alabo said the body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary for autopsy, while investigations are ongoing.
The suspects arrested are Rinji Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear and Nensemka Fwanji.
