Team Nigeria has claimed the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.

The Nigerian team, made up of Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf, emerged ahead of contestants from Asia, Africa, the United States, China and Canada during the competition, which was held from July 14 to 19.

The championship also attracted participants from several African countries, including Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The victory was announced by the Nigeria Spelling Bee in a post on its official Facebook page on Sunday, confirming that Team Nigeria secured the top prize in the Middle School category.

Before the competition, the organisers had described the Nigerian representatives as “brilliant, articulate and exceptional,” expressing confidence in their ability to perform strongly on the international stage.

Reacting to the triumph, the organisers said the achievement highlights the students’ resilience, determination and dedication to academic excellence. They added that the team earned its place at the global competition after progressing through the Nigeria Spelling Bee and later qualifying at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Ar-Raheem International College also celebrated the success on Facebook, announcing that two of its students were among the four-member Nigerian team that won the gold medal at the prestigious international competition.
