Cooking gas prices have surged across Nigeria, with retail rates reaching as high as N1,700 per kilogramme in some areas ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The increase is being driven by a sharp rise in household and commercial demand as families and food vendors stock up for large-scale cooking during the festive period. The development has further exposed ongoing weaknesses in the country’s gas supply chain, which continues to struggle whenever demand spikes.
The Federal Government has already declared May 27 and 28 as public holidays for the Sallah festivities, a period traditionally marked by heavy cooking and large social gatherings.
However, the seasonal surge in consumption has collided with a strained distribution and depot system, pushing prices upward and placing additional pressure on household budgets, especially in major urban centres across the country. Market analysts say the recurring price spikes highlight the need for improved supply stability and better infrastructure to cushion consumers during peak demand periods.
