The United States Army has scheduled the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted for the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, that left 13 people dead and 32 others injured.
According to an execution order signed by Acting Secretary of the Army Adam Telle on October 6, 2026, Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood on December 3, 2026.
The execution is set for 1pm Central Standard Time and follows the approval of Hasan’s death sentence by US President Donald Trump on October 2.
The Army memorandum stated that the President had formally approved the death sentence handed down in the case of United States v. Major Hasan, Nidal M.
The order directed that the execution take place at Fort Hood on Thursday, December 3, 2026, at 1pm by firing squad, in accordance with Army Regulation 190-55.
The Commandant of the United States Disciplinary Barracks will serve as the execution officer, according to the order.
The development follows an announcement earlier in the week by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had recommended the execution and that President Trump had approved the recommendation.
Parnell said Hegseth had recommended death by US Army firing squad for Hasan, adding that the Secretary of the Army would determine the time and location for the execution.
Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder over the November 5, 2009 attack at Fort Hood.
The former Army psychiatrist opened fire at a medical facility at the Texas military base where soldiers were undergoing processing for deployment.
The attack resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to 32 others. Hasan was subsequently sentenced to death following his military trial.
If the execution proceeds as scheduled, Hasan would become the first member of the US military to be executed since 1961.
Military executions are extremely rare in the United States and are subject to presidential approval under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
The last known US military execution took place in 1961. The last known execution of a US military prisoner by firing squad occurred in 1945, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
The planned execution would therefore represent a significant development in the history of the US military justice system, given the decades-long gap since the country last carried out a military execution.
