The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is set to brief Nigerians on Tuesday as preparations for the 2027 general elections enter the final 100-day countdown.
The commission will hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and World Press Conference in Abuja, where it is expected to provide updates on its level of preparedness and key aspects of the electoral process.
According to a statement obtained by The PUNCH on Sunday, the briefing will cover areas including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures being implemented to protect the integrity of the elections.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja and will be addressed by the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
INEC said the engagement is intended to give Nigerians, political parties and other key actors a clearer picture of the commission’s preparations as the 2027 elections move into the final 100 days before voting.
The commission said discussions would provide updates on its preparations, including the status of the voters’ register, the nomination of candidates and arrangements for the movement of personnel and electoral materials.
INEC is also expected to outline critical measures being put in place to safeguard the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
Beyond providing an update on its preparations, the commission said the national stakeholders’ meeting is aimed at strengthening cooperation and communication with institutions and groups whose activities are important to the conduct and security of the elections.
INEC said the meeting reflects its commitment to transparency, early communication with the public and collaboration with key participants across the electoral system.
Political party leaders are expected to attend the engagement, alongside security agencies participating in the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
Members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations and election observer groups are also expected at the meeting.
Other participants listed by the commission include disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives.
The engagement comes at a crucial stage of preparations for the 2027 general elections, with INEC expected to complete several administrative, logistical and technological arrangements before the polls.
Although the commission did not indicate whether any changes to the existing electoral timetable would be announced, it confirmed that the INEC chairman would address participants alongside other stakeholders.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10am on Tuesday, October 6, with invited guests expected to be seated by that time.
To allow Nigerians outside the venue to follow the proceedings, INEC said the event would be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed through its official social media platforms.
The commission, however, said physical attendance at the venue would be strictly by invitation. Accredited journalists and other invited guests will be required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
The briefing is expected to provide an opportunity for INEC and other stakeholders to address public concerns and clarify aspects of the preparations as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
