Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has said the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s unused warm-up against Norway became a major issue largely because of the forward’s status as a national icon.
Speaking after Portugal’s Nations League match on Sunday, Jesus described the situation as one that had been blown out of proportion. He also said the incident should not affect his professional relationship with Ronaldo.
According to a report by Fabrizio Romano on X on Monday, Jesus said the situation had become difficult to understand because of Ronaldo’s unique position within Portuguese football and the national team.
Jesus explained that the controversy over whether Ronaldo should warm up or come on as a substitute was amplified simply because the player involved was Ronaldo, who has become a major symbol of Portuguese football.
The controversy began after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp last week following the team’s 2-1 victory over Norway. The 41-year-old forward was sent to warm up for an extended period during the second half but was ultimately not introduced into the game.
Ronaldo had started Portugal’s previous match against Wales before being substituted, making his prolonged warm-up and failure to enter against Norway a subject of widespread discussion.
Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, has maintained that the episode was the result of a misunderstanding rather than a serious breakdown in their relationship.
The Portugal coach has also indicated that the situation can be resolved without difficulty if Ronaldo remains interested in continuing his international career. He has therefore left the possibility open for the veteran forward to return to future Portugal squads.
Jesus’ latest comments appear aimed at playing down the dispute and maintaining a working relationship with Ronaldo as Portugal continues preparations for its upcoming international commitments.
