Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, vice presidential candidate, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the appeal while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja.
The former Kano State governor urged Atiku to concentrate on his traditional role as the Wazirin Adamawa, citing the former vice president’s age and health.
Kwankwaso also appealed to Atiku’s supporters, particularly those from Adamawa State, to encourage him to step aside from the presidential contest.
He said if his political camp succeeds in 2027, efforts would be made to take care of Atiku, while also calling for an apology to the former vice president.
The comments come amid ongoing efforts by opposition politicians to unite under a single platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Atiku had earlier said in April that the 2027 election could be his final attempt at the presidency, citing his age and the significance of the contest.
The former vice president has contested Nigeria’s presidency in 2007, 2011, 2019 and 2023, but lost on each occasion.
He has continued to advocate for political restructuring, economic liberalisation and greater private-sector participation in Nigeria’s economy.
