The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, has started introducing self-service fuel pumps at selected NNPC Retail stations, allowing motorists to purchase and dispense petrol themselves using a mobile application.
The initiative is part of NNPC’s plan to establish between 50 and 70 smart, self-service stations across Nigeria within the next six months.
Under the new system, motorists do not need to rely on a station attendant to dispense their fuel. Instead, customers can select the amount they want, make payment through the app and use a generated code to activate the pump.
NNPC Retail shared a guide on its X handle on Friday explaining how motorists can use the new service.
How to Use the NNPC Self-Service Fuel System
Step 1: Download the app
Motorists should first download the NRL Fuel App. The download link is available through the official NNPC Retail X account.
Step 2: Select fuel purchase
Open the app, choose Fuel Purchase and select the type of fuel required.
Step 3: Select a participating station
Browse the list of available stations and select an NNPC Retail station offering the self-service option.
The service is currently limited to selected locations as NNPC continues its rollout. Participating stations can be identified by the green “Self-Serve” badge displayed next to their names.
Step 4: Enter the amount and make payment
After selecting the station, enter the amount to be spent on fuel.
Review the quantity and price displayed, then select “Pay from Wallet” to complete the transaction.
Step 5: Receive the self-service code
Once payment is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing the Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.
Step 6: Dispense the fuel
At the fuel pump, enter the eight-digit self-service code on the terminal and press the hash key.
After the code is validated, pick up the nozzle and dispense the fuel. The system is designed to provide the quantity corresponding to the amount already paid for.
NNPC Plans Wider Smart Station Network
NNPC Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the self-service model is part of the company’s broader plan to transform conventional filling stations into energy and mobility hubs.
At a newly commissioned smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said customers would be able to complete transactions through their phones and dispense the exact amount of fuel purchased.
According to NNPC, the smart stations will combine conventional petrol sales with other services, including electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas and additional mobility services.
The company said the rollout is intended to modernise its retail operations while giving motorists more control over the fuel-purchasing process.
