Charismatic bishops endorse Tinubu for 2027 re-election

The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu to seek another term in office in the 2027 presidential election.

The President-General of the conference, Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, announced the endorsement on Wednesday in a video from the organisation’s 2026 synod that has circulated widely online.

Kawas said the decision followed the bishops’ assessment of the Tinubu administration.

He argued that the President’s appointments had not been influenced by religious considerations, despite Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima running on a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election.

The archbishop also praised Tinubu for supporting the emergence of Christian governors and said the President had demonstrated support for Christianity alongside his wife.

Kawas further commended the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for appointing what he described as a born-again Christian and gospel preacher as the party’s national leader.

He said the bishops would continue to support Tinubu through prayers and advocacy, particularly regarding government programmes they believe could contribute to Nigeria’s development.

The CBCN leader said the group would continue supporting Tinubu if he decides to contest the 2027 election and formally stated that the conference had endorsed him for the presidency.

Kawas also claimed that Tinubu had responded to the bishops’ earlier call for him to engage US President Donald Trump over Nigeria’s security challenges.

The bishop, however, called on the Federal Government to give greater consideration to religious leaders when making political appointments.

He argued that both Christian and Muslim religious leaders should be considered in the appointment process rather than being left out.

Among the dignitaries present at the event were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
