The President of the Guild of Sports Editors and veteran sports journalist, Tony Ubani, has called for a major restructuring of the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), citing the continued decline in the performance of Nigeria’s national football teams.
Speaking on the Sportsville programme, Ubani said there is growing agreement among football stakeholders and Nigerians that significant reforms are needed to rebuild the country’s football system.
He stressed that the call for change should not be limited to replacing the current administration, but should also involve putting people with strong technical expertise and a thorough understanding of the football system in key positions.
Quoting the Latin expression vox populi, vox Dei, meaning “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” Ubani said public dissatisfaction with the state of Nigerian football is supported by declining statistics from the country’s national teams.
He noted that football remains one of the few things capable of uniting Nigerians, saying the sport’s current challenges require urgent and fundamental action.
