Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has become the first African female artist to receive a Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Diamond certification in the United States. The milestone was reached for the song “Wait For U,” a collaboration with Future featuring Drake, after the track surpassed 10 million certified units in the US. Music monitoring account Chart Data reported the song has sold more than 11 million units stateside.
Tems joins Wizkid as one of only two African artists to earn a Diamond single in the US; Wizkid achieved the honor with his feature on Drake’s “One Dance.” The achievement highlights Tems’ growing international profile and the expanding global influence of Nigerian music.
