Engr. Ogunyemi Olumide Idowu calls for increased investment in plastic gasification technology

Engr. Ogunyemi Olumide Idowu has called for increased investment in plastic gasification technology as a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s growing plastic waste challenge.

Speaking on Trade FM’s Ask the Expert segment on the topic, “Circular Economy: Converting Plastic Waste to Gas by Gasification,” he explained that gasification is a controlled process that converts plastic waste into useful gases that can serve as cleaner and more affordable sources of energy. According to him, the technology provides a safer alternative to open burning, which releases harmful emissions that pose serious environmental and health risks.

He noted that adopting plastic gasification would significantly reduce the volume of plastic waste ending up in landfills while creating economic opportunities through the production of alternative fuel for domestic and industrial use. He added that the project is currently being implemented on a small scale, with plans to expand through collaboration between government, researchers, and the private sector.

Engr. Ogunyemi also urged policymakers to strengthen waste management systems, improve monitoring of plastic waste, and support research-driven innovations capable of transforming environmental challenges into economic opportunities. He maintained that embracing technologies such as gasification would not only promote a cleaner environment but also contribute to job creation, sustainable development, and Nigeria’s transition to a circular economy.
