Kidnap of Retired General Highlights Growing Security Risks for Economic Activities in Katsina

The abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife has once again drawn attention to the security challenges affecting economic activities in parts of northern Nigeria.A video released by the abductors on Saturday showed the couple in captivity following their kidnapping along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three of their associates and the return of livestock allegedly seized from them. The victims appealed to government authorities and community leaders to facilitate negotiations aimed at securing their freedom.Beyond the humanitarian concerns, the incident underscores the growing economic costs of insecurity in rural and semi-urban communities. Frequent kidnappings and bandit attacks continue to disrupt transportation, discourage investment, increase business operating costs, and limit agricultural productivity across affected regions.Analysts note that major road corridors in parts of Katsina and neighbouring states have become increasingly risky for commuters, traders and logistics operators, leading to higher security expenses and reduced commercial activities. The retired general, speaking briefly in the video, advocated dialogue and peaceful coexistence, suggesting that the abductors had indicated a willingness to engage in discussions. The development comes amid broader concerns over the impact of insecurity on local economies, with businesses, farmers and investors calling for stronger security measures to safeguard lives, property and economic assets. As of the time of reporting, neither the Katsina State Government nor security agencies had issued an official statement regarding the video or the status of ongoing rescue efforts.
