Women’s T20 World Cup: England Drops Social Media Ban, Focuses on Digital Brand Value and Player Support

England’s women’s cricket team will not impose a social media restriction on players during the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, reflecting a shift in how modern sports organisations manage athlete branding, digital engagement, and mental wellbeing.

The tournament, which begins on June 12 in England, will instead see players supported in managing their online presence, rather than being required to disengage from platforms such as X and Instagram.

At the previous 50-over World Cup victory in 2017, the squad adopted a team-wide decision to step back from social media. However, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt says the digital landscape has evolved significantly, particularly for younger players whose commercial and personal brands are closely tied to online visibility.

She noted that social media is now deeply integrated into professional sport, not only as a communication tool but also as a key revenue stream through sponsorships, endorsements, and fan engagement.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is instead focusing on structured support systems, including content moderation tools and third-party monitoring services to reduce exposure to harmful commentary while allowing players to maintain their digital profiles.

The shift also highlights the growing commercialisation of women’s cricket, with increased visibility showcased through promotional campaigns such as high-profile billboards in central London featuring leading players including Sophia Dunkley and Lauren Bell.

While acknowledging that online criticism remains part of professional sport, players say the focus is now on balance—leveraging social media for growth and income while managing its psychological risks through better institutional support.
