Ekiti LG Scandal: Vice-Chairman Remanded Over Alleged Self-Kidnap Scheme

A governance and public finance controversy has erupted in Ekiti State after a vice-chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area was remanded in custody over allegations that she staged her own kidnapping to raise funds for political and personal obligations.

Authorities say the incident, which initially appeared to be a security emergency, was allegedly orchestrated as a financial scheme at a time when the council area is already under pressure from real insecurity concerns, including reports of abducted residents still in captivity.

The accused local government official, Grace Ogunleye, was arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti on multiple charges linked to the alleged plot. The court ordered her remand in a correctional facility pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The case has raised fresh concerns about governance credibility, political financing pressures, and the reputational risks facing local administrations already operating in a fragile security and economic environment.
