Activist and politician Aisha Yesufu has publicly challenged the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over the party’s handling of its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial ticket, raising concerns about transparency and internal democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, Yesufu criticized the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, for allegedly making commitments that were not fulfilled. In a video that has since circulated widely on social media, the former FCT senatorial aspirant insisted that party leaders must be accountable to members and uphold promises made during the nomination process.
According to Yesufu, the dispute is not about personal ambition but about ensuring a credible and transparent system within the party. She argued that the integrity of the NDC should take precedence over individual interests and maintained that she would have accepted defeat had the process been conducted fairly. Her remarks come amid speculation that the party had effectively handed the FCT senatorial ticket to another aspirant, Amanda Pam, following the decision not to hold primaries for the position.
The controversy highlights growing concerns over internal party democracy as political parties begin positioning for the 2027 general elections. Yesufu, who recently joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), withdrew from the FCT Senate race after the party reportedly abandoned plans to conduct primaries, a move that has sparked debate among party members and observers.
