Lagos Food Prices Rise on Transport Cost Surge

Food prices across major Lagos markets recorded a fresh uptick in May 2026, partially reversing the relief seen in April, as rising transportation and logistics costs once again weighed on household spending and supply chain efficiency. The increase reflects renewed pressure on traders and consumers despite earlier signs of price stabilization.

According to market data, the surge is closely tied to higher diesel and transport costs, with fuel prices rising from about N1,245 per litre in April to an average of N1,330 per litre in May. This increase pushed distribution costs higher, forcing traders to adjust prices of key staple commodities across key Lagos markets. A survey by the research arm of Nairametrics, which tracked 67 staple food items across Mushin, Mile 12, Daleko and Oyingbo markets, shows that while food inflation pressures appear to be easing compared to 2024 and early 2025 levels, persistent logistics constraints continue to slow the pace of price recovery in Nigeria’s food supply chain.
