FIFA has granted Iran permission to relocate its 2026 World Cup training base from the United States to Mexico, following security concerns linked to rising tensions in the Middle East.
The Iranian Football Federation confirmed that the decision came after a series of discussions with tournament officials in Istanbul, as well as a virtual meeting in Tehran involving FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström. The approval includes the use of a base camp in Tijuana.
The 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to kick off in less than three weeks. Mexico will open the tournament against South Africa.
Iran, also known as Team Melli, will begin its campaign on June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles. The team will also face Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles and Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The adjustment ensures Iran’s preparation continues smoothly as the tournament approaches, despite ongoing geopolitical concerns.
