Kano Gov Approves Promotions for 18,984 SUBEB Workers

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has approved the implementation of promotions for 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, covering the January and July 2026 promotion cycles.

The approval followed a request from the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, for the release of N235,116,339.09 to fund the promotion exercise across the state’s 44 Local Government Education Authorities, LGEAs.

The state government disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director General, Media and Publicity at the Government House, Sunusi Tofa.

According to the statement, the affected personnel are eligible teaching and non-teaching staff whose promotion processes have been completed. The implementation will also include the corresponding salary adjustments arising from the promotions.

SUBEB said the timely implementation of promotions was important for improving staff morale, supporting career progression and strengthening capacity within the basic education sector.

The board noted that about 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel currently work across Kano’s 44 LGEAs, making SUBEB one of the largest public institutions in the state.

The government also disclosed that the Yusuf administration inherited significant promotion backlogs affecting education workers. Some of the outstanding promotions had accumulated arrears covering as much as seven years, while another backlog had remained unresolved for about one and a half years.

The administration said it had previously approved and implemented some of the outstanding promotions, a move it said helped improve staff morale and rebuild workers’ confidence in the system.

SUBEB said the necessary processes for the 2026 promotion cycles had also been completed, including the verification of eligible personnel and the calculation of the corresponding salary adjustments.

The latest approval was subsequently ratified by the Kano State Executive Council, clearing the way for the release of the funds and implementation of the promotions.

The state government said the decision was part of the administration’s broader commitment to improving the welfare, career development and working conditions of public servants in the basic education sector.
