Peter Obi Promises to Review Fuel Subsidy Policy if Elected

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi has said he would reinstate petroleum subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general elections, arguing that his administration would first tackle corruption.

Obi made the statement on Monday during a town hall meeting organised for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto. He identified corruption as a major challenge facing Nigeria and said his administration would seek to address it across different sectors.

Obi also urged Nigerians to support NDC candidates at all levels during the 2027 elections, describing the development of the country as a collective responsibility. He said the party was committed to what he described as a “politics of care and service to Nigerians.”

The former Anambra State governor said government resources would be directed towards areas including security and education. He described education as a major priority and also pledged to connect all state capitals by rail to support economic activity.

NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the delegation was in Sokoto to engage residents and seek their support ahead of the 2027 elections. He said the team had earlier visited the Sultan of Sokoto, who, according to him, offered prayers for the ticket and conveyed his goodwill.

Kwankwaso also highlighted security concerns in parts of Nigeria, particularly banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, and said the party was committed to addressing the challenges if elected.

The NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Dr Shamsudeen Haido, separately pledged good governance, while the party’s state chairman, Alhaji Bello Yabo, said the meeting provided an opportunity for residents to hear directly from the presidential candidates about their plans.
