African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is receiving medical treatment in France, disputing the Presidency’s explanation that the President is abroad on a working vacation.
Sowore made the allegation during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Monday, while discussing Tinubu’s extended stay in Europe and his decision not to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. When asked for evidence, Sowore said his information came from sources he considered reliable, but acknowledged that he did not know the nature of the alleged medical condition.
He also claimed that some of the President’s occasional public engagements were intended to demonstrate that he was continuing with official duties. These claims have not been independently established in the report.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for what the Presidency initially described as a three-week annual vacation. He travelled first to London before proceeding to Paris, France. The Presidency later said the trip had been extended by a few days.
The Presidency has rejected concerns about the President’s health. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said on Sunday that Tinubu was “hale and hearty” and expected to return to Nigeria during the week. Onanuga also said the President had continued to carry out official responsibilities while abroad, including engagements with investors in France.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the United Nations General Assembly in New York after the Presidency announced that Tinubu would not attend the event in person.
