Argentine President Javier Milei has criticised the United Nations, describing it as a “useless organisation” and accusing its officials of failing to uphold international security and human rights.
Speaking at the UN on Wednesday, Milei alleged that the organisation had allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to persist while failing to address Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina.
The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory claimed by Argentina. The two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982.
Milei accused Britain of disregarding a UN resolution calling on both sides to avoid unilateral actions concerning the disputed territory.
He argued that countries that respect international rules receive little benefit, while those that violate them often face no consequences.
Meanwhile, Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and strengthening connections between key economic sectors and major Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The project, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to support investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including development around the Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon deposit.
The development comes days after the United Kingdom backed companies and individuals operating in the Falkland Islands following an Argentine court order halting an oil project involving British and Israeli companies near the disputed territory.
UK Minister for Overseas Territories, Uma Kumaran, said Britain would continue supporting businesses and individuals providing goods and services to the Falkland Islands, including those involved in the hydrocarbons sector.
