United States President Donald Trump has declined to intervene in the case of Lindsay Clancy, a 36-year-old Massachusetts woman accused of killing her three young children in January 2023.
Clancy is facing three counts of first-degree murder over the deaths of her children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan.
Speaking on Sunday when asked about the possibility of pardoning Clancy, Trump described the case as tragic but said it falls under state jurisdiction rather than federal authority.
Trump said there was no positive outcome regardless of the eventual decision, noting that three children had lost their lives.
Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, had appealed to Trump last week to pardon his client. However, he acknowledged that the US President does not have the power to pardon someone convicted of a state crime.
Trump said the matter should therefore be handled by the relevant state authorities. He also described Reddington as a capable lawyer and expressed hope that the case would eventually be resolved.
Clancy’s defence team has maintained that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a serious psychiatric condition that can cause a person to lose touch with reality following childbirth.
Following the deaths of her children, Clancy attempted suicide and sustained injuries that left her paralysed.
Her first trial ended in a mistrial earlier this month after the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision following a week of deliberations.
Reports said the jury was divided 11-1, with 11 jurors reportedly supporting an acquittal on the basis that Clancy was not criminally responsible for the deaths.
