Lions International has organised a spelling bee and reading competition for secondary school students in Lagos to commemorate the United Nations World Literacy Day.
The event, held at the Lions International Vocational Centre in Agege, brought together students from five secondary schools, who competed in spelling and reading skills.
The participating schools were State Senior Grammar School, Surulere; Oregun Senior High School; Ikosi Senior High School; Eric Moore Junior School; and Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School.
Several Lions leaders attended the event, including the Pioneer District Governor, Lion Olumo Sunday Akere, PMJF, NLCF; First Vice District Governor, Lion Matthew Fapounda, MJF, NLCF; Cabinet Secretary, Lion Temisaren Opadele, MJF, NLCF; District Chief of Staff, Lion Moradeke Ande, MJF, NLCF; and Past District Governor, Lion Oluwakemi Eribake, PMJF, NLCF.
In the spelling bee category, Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School emerged first, followed by Oregun Senior High School in second place and State Senior Grammar School, Surulere, in third.
The reading competition ended with Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School and State Senior Grammar School tied for first place. A spelling bee was subsequently used to determine the winner. Eric Moore Junior School placed second, while Ikosi Senior High School came third.
In the overall ranking, Oregun Senior High School emerged champion, Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School came second, while State Senior Grammar School, Surulere, finished third.
The competition was aimed at promoting literacy, reading culture and academic excellence among young people.
