Lions Club Organises Reading, Spelling Bee to Mark 2026 International Literacy Day

The Lions Club has organised the 2026 Reading and Spelling Bee Competition in Lagos as part of activities to commemorate International Literacy Day.

The competition was held at the club’s Vocational Centre in Agege, Lagos, and attracted students, teachers, judges, community leaders and other guests.

Speaking at the event, the pioneer District Governor, Lion Olumo Sunday Akere, PMJF, NLCF, said the initiative was aimed at promoting literacy and preparing young people for future responsibilities.

Akere said Lions Clubs International was committed to supporting programmes that align with the objectives of the United Nations, describing literacy as an important foundation for the development of future leaders.

He urged students to take their education seriously, particularly at the elementary and secondary school levels, noting that the knowledge and skills acquired during their formative years would serve as a guide throughout their lives.

According to him, strong literacy skills would also help students communicate effectively and cope with the demands of higher education and their future careers.

The pioneer District Governor congratulated the students for participating in the competition, stressing that every participant should regard the experience as an achievement regardless of who emerged winner.

He also commended the teachers for their role in preparing and guiding the students, while appreciating guests and participants who travelled from different locations to attend the event.

Akere encouraged the students to remain focused and committed to their studies, describing literacy and education as essential tools for building responsible future leaders.

The annual International Literacy Day is observed on September 8 to promote literacy and highlight its importance to individuals, communities and national development.
