The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says it is adding 60.82 megawatts (MW) to Nigeria’s electricity supply through a series of newly launched decentralised renewable energy projects across the country.
The agency on Wednesday commenced another 13.92 megawatt-peak (MWp) of interconnected hybrid solar mini-grid projects in Yobe State, extending its recent nationwide expansion of power infrastructure.
Before the Yobe launch, the REA had already initiated 46.9MW of renewable energy projects in five states. The projects include a 20MW mini-grid in Egume, Kogi State; 11.9MWp in Ogu-Bolo, Rivers State; 10MW in Kofare, Adamawa State; 3.5MW in Ambursa, Kebbi State; and 1.5MW in Pankshin, Plateau State.
The Yobe project, supported by the World Bank and backed by 40 distribution transformers, is designed to improve power supply in major commercial and residential areas and stimulate economic activities.
The 13.92MWp capacity is spread across several locations rather than being concentrated in a single plant. The installations include 3.20MWp in Nguru, 3.20MWp in Yarimaram (Potiskum), 2.98MWp in Gashua, 2.78MWp in Rugan Fulani (Potiskum), and 1.76MWp in Waziri Ibrahim Estate, Damaturu.
At the flag-off ceremony, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni praised the Federal Government for promoting alternative energy development, saying the project supports his administration’s goal of building resilient infrastructure that can enhance industrial growth and agricultural productivity.
REA Managing Director Dr. Abba Aliyu said the interconnected hybrid mini-grids were designed to work seamlessly with existing electricity distribution networks.
According to him, the projects are intended not only to provide electricity but also to create opportunities for businesses, innovation, agriculture, healthcare delivery and broader economic growth.
Aliyu added that, beyond the current 60.82MW of projects being launched nationwide, the agency has 14 additional projects in the pipeline in Yobe State.
He said the planned projects, which emerged from a strategic roundtable held in June 2025, will contribute an additional 15.3MWp of capacity.
When completed, the new projects are expected to provide electricity access through 23,870 new connections in communities including Jawur Katamma, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu and Dibbwol.
