Rescued Oyo pupils, teachers may meet families today

Pupils and teachers rescued after spending 56 days in captivity in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State are expected to reunite with their families today following their anticipated handover by the military to the Oyo State Government.

The victims, who regained their freedom on Friday, have been receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support at the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they have remained under a 48-hour medical observation.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the victims on Saturday, said the observation period was necessary to assess their health before the military formally transfers them to the state government.

He also revealed that arrangements had been made to facilitate reunions with family members, noting that some of the rescued children had repeatedly asked to see their parents.

Families of the victims have expressed optimism ahead of the expected reunion. Some parents spent Sunday in prayer and thanksgiving, while relatives travelled to Ibadan in anticipation of receiving their loved ones.

The victims were abducted on May 15 when armed men attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinle, all in Oriire Local Government Area.

Although the Oyo State Government is hopeful the military will complete the formal handover today, officials noted that the process remains under the control of the military and could be adjusted if necessary for operational reasons.

Meanwhile, there were celebrations across parts of Ogbomoso on Sunday as families and residents gathered in churches to give thanks for the safe return of the victims.

One of the emotional moments came when Professor Wole Alamu, husband of the principal of Ahoro Esinle School, was seen dancing during a thanksgiving service after his wife was rescued.

The successful rescue has also renewed calls for stronger security in Oriire Local Government Area.

Traditional rulers in the area urged the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen security by upgrading the Police Post in Pamo to a full Divisional Police Headquarters.

The monarchs said the recent abduction exposed serious security gaps in the council, which comprises about 740 villages but is served by only one divisional police headquarters.

The Oyo State Government also reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Federal Government to improve security around the Old Oyo National Park, saying enhanced surveillance and continuous clearing of the forest would help prevent criminals from using the area as a hideout.

Officials said the government remains committed to protecting lives, restoring confidence in affected communities and supporting the rehabilitation of the rescued pupils and teachers as they return to their families and normal life.
