Missing planes, missing billions: Residents demand answers over alleged N50bn ‘Ebonyi Air’ purchase

Six months after the Ebonyi State Government announced the purchase of three aircraft under the Ebonyi Air Initiative, questions continue to surround the project as neither the aircraft nor an official account of the reported N50 billion allocated for the initiative has been made public.

Governor Francis Nwifuru announced during his New Year’s Day broadcast on January 1, 2026, that his administration had acquired three aircraft, promising they would arrive in the state before the end of January.

The governor said the proposed airline would improve transportation, attract investors, boost tourism, create jobs and strengthen Ebonyi State’s economy.

However, six months later, there has been no official update on the aircraft, prompting growing public interest and calls for clarification from residents, political stakeholders and analysts.

Critics have questioned the transparency of the project, urging the state government to provide details on the status of the aircraft acquisition and the funds reportedly allocated for it.

Allegations Over Reported N50 Billion Allocation

Public affairs analyst Nwoba Nwoba recently questioned the project on social media, alleging that N50 billion had been approved in August 2025 for the establishment of Ebonyi Air.

He further claimed that the funds were entrusted to an individual to facilitate the aircraft purchase but alleged that the transaction failed.

Nwoba also alleged that the reported failed transaction was responsible for the delay in launching the proposed airline.

These allegations have not been independently verified, and the Ebonyi State Government has not officially responded to the claims.

Calls for Greater Transparency

Another commentator, Prince Anyigor Methuselah Maduabuchi, questioned the economic wisdom of investing in an airline project, arguing that the reported funds could have been channelled into sectors such as agriculture or healthcare to stimulate economic growth.

He said the governor had publicly announced that the aircraft would arrive within weeks of the January announcement but noted that no official explanation has been provided regarding the project’s current status.

Experts Raise Aviation Concerns

Aviation analyst Anthony Okechukwu described the airline business as highly technical and capital-intensive, noting that successful airline operations require detailed planning, professional management and sustainable business models.

He explained that many airlines around the world operate leased aircraft rather than purchasing them outright, adding that aviation investments should be managed by experienced professionals.

Okechukwu said reports suggesting that such a large aviation project could be handled through a single individual raise important questions that require clarification.

Opposition Voices Demand Accountability

The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ebonyi State, Dr. Kingsley Agbor, criticised the proposed airport and airline projects, describing them as an imprudent use of public funds.

He argued that the state government should provide a full account of the reported expenditure and called for investigations into any alleged wrongdoing if public funds were improperly handled.

Similarly, the Labour Party’s 2027 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Eze Splendour, called for accountability over the project, saying Ebonyi residents deserve to know the status of both the proposed aircraft and the reported funds.

He maintained that investments of such magnitude should deliver visible benefits to the people and suggested that similar resources could have supported infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and industrial development within the state.

State Government Yet to Respond

As of the time of filing the original report, the Ebonyi State Government had not issued an official statement addressing the concerns surrounding the Ebonyi Air project.

The former Commissioner for Aviation Technology, Ngozi Obichukwu, declined to comment, saying she would respond at a later date.

The Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe, also did not provide a substantive response despite earlier indicating that he would address the matter.

The continued absence of an official update has fuelled public calls for greater transparency regarding the Ebonyi Air initiative and the reported investment in the project.
