The President of the Lagos State Council of Tradesmen and Artisans, Engr. Lawrence Ajayi, has emphasized the importance of certification, continuous training and professional standards in strengthening Nigeria’s artisan sector and national development.
Speaking on the role of tradesmen in nation-building, Ajayi noted that certification and professional recognition are essential for improving credibility, trust and quality of workmanship within the sector. He also stressed that artisans must prioritize quality over price to remain competitive.
He highlighted occupational safety and health as a major concern, calling for improved safety practices and better awareness among artisans to reduce workplace risks.
Ajayi further encouraged continuous upskilling, saying ongoing training is necessary for artisans to adapt to new technologies, materials and modern methods of work.
He also urged artisans to embrace digital platforms and social media to expand their businesses and reach more clients, noting that technology presents new opportunities for growth.
According to him, stronger collaboration between government, educational institutions and industry stakeholders will help improve skills development and create more opportunities in the vocational sector.
He added that improving public perception of vocational careers is key to encouraging more young people to pursue skilled trades, describing artisans as essential contributors to the economy and national development.
