Thailand has donated 12 metric tonnes of rice valued at about $22,000 to support vulnerable communities facing rising food insecurity in Nigeria. The donation was presented in Abuja by the Thai Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin, and handed over to the World Food Programme (WFP) for distribution, with priority to crisis-affected populations in the North-East.
The gesture comes as Nigeria continues to battle a worsening food security situation driven by conflict, economic pressures, and climate-related shocks. Thailand, one of the world’s leading rice producers, is estimated to produce over 34 million metric tonnes of rice annually.
Food security assessments by organisations including PwC and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) project that up to 34.7 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity in 2026, particularly during the June–August lean season. Analysts attribute the crisis to insecurity in farming regions, ongoing farmer-herder clashes, banditry in the North-West, and extreme weather events disrupting agricultural output
