Doctors Need N1m Minimum Salary to Curb Brain Drain, ARD President Says

The President of the Association of Resident Doctors at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Dr John Omotoso, has called for a minimum monthly salary of N1 million for doctors, arguing that improved remuneration is critical to retaining skilled healthcare professionals in Nigeria.

Speaking at the induction of medical graduates into the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences Medical Alumni Association, Omotoso said poor pay and unfavourable working conditions continue to drive medical personnel abroad, worsening the shortage of healthcare workers across the country. He urged the government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector and implement reforms that strengthen local healthcare delivery. According to him, better compensation and policies that encourage investment in domestic health services are essential to reversing the sector’s growing talent drain.
