Ime Okon Named in South Africa’s 2026 World Cup Squad, Set for Major Tournament Debut

Nigerian-born defender Ime Okon has been named in South Africa’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Hannover 96 centre-back, who was born to a Nigerian father and South African mother, has already made five appearances for Bafana Bafana.

The 22-year-old is set to feature at his first major international tournament after missing out on South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Head coach Hugo Broos also handed maiden call-ups to Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross as part of the squad selection.

Nineteen of the 26 players selected currently play in the South African domestic league. South Africa will be making their fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having previously competed in the 1998 and 2002 editions before hosting the tournament in 2010. Bafana Bafana failed to progress beyond the group stage in all three appearances.
