The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has acknowledged concerns raised by residents of Igbokoda in Ondo State following an aircraft accident, particularly reports of an offensive smell and fears of possible environmental damage.
The Air Force said it was taking the concerns seriously and would work with the relevant authorities to assess the situation after completing search and recovery operations.
In a statement on Thursday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the NAF recognised the anxiety and discomfort the incident had caused residents.
He explained that search and recovery activities were still ongoing, with the Air Force working alongside partner agencies to ensure the wreckage was recovered safely and in an orderly manner.
Ejodame added that, once the recovery operation had been completed, the NAF would engage environmental and public health authorities, as well as other relevant agencies, to evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate response to any identified environmental concerns.
The Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to the wellbeing of the affected community, pledging to work with relevant stakeholders to protect public health, safety and the environment.
It also assured residents that any necessary measures would be considered in response to the findings of the assessment.
