ATM transactions in Nigeria jump 208% to N89.12tn in 2025 — CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reported a sharp increase in the value of ATM transactions in Nigeria, which rose by 208.4 percent year-on-year to N89.12 trillion in 2025, compared with N29.12 trillion in 2024.

The figures were contained in the CBN 2025 Annual Report, which said the growth was driven by changing consumer preferences, increased use of digital payment channels, expansion of e-commerce and improvements in payment infrastructure.

The report also showed that the volume of e-payment transactions increased by 2.62 percent to 47.88 billion transactions in 2025, up from 46.65 billion in 2024.

In value terms, total e-payment transactions rose by 26.07 percent to N4,360.33 trillion, compared with N3,458.77 trillion recorded in the previous year.

According to the apex bank, ATM transactions recorded the strongest growth among payment channels, with transaction volume increasing by 61.94 percent to 1.66 billion.

This was followed by a 20.89 percent increase in USSD transactions to 669.55 million and a 19.78 percent rise in Point of Sale (PoS) transactions to 15.66 billion.

However, the CBN said declines were recorded in the volume of transactions carried out through mobile apps, internet or web platforms, and direct debit channels.

Despite the overall growth in digital payments, the CBN warned that the payment system still faces important risks, including systemic risk arising from the dominance of a few major payment service providers, fraud-related losses, cyber threats and the activities of unlicensed operators.
