FG Tightens Spending Controls, Cuts Imprest Limits for Public Officials

The Federal Government has introduced stricter financial control measures across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), setting new limits on reimbursable imprest to promote accountability and curb unnecessary spending in the public sector.

Under the 2026 Annual General Imprest Warrant, ministers can now access a maximum reimbursable imprest of N700,000, while permanent secretaries and directors-general are limited to N500,000. Directors and heads of departments will have a ceiling of N300,000, while heads of formations and other authorised holders are capped at N100,000. The new policy, issued through a Federal Treasury Circular by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, is aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline, improving oversight of government funds, and ensuring prudent management of public resources in line with existing financial regulations.
