The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a public health precaution to hospitals, laboratories, and medical waste handlers in Lagos State following renewed concerns over Ebola cases reported in parts of East Africa.
In a statement released on Friday, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the importance of strict infection prevention protocols, particularly in the handling and disposal of medical waste and biological specimens.
He stressed that while no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease has been recorded in Lagos State or anywhere in Nigeria, the advisory is a proactive public health measure aimed at strengthening preparedness and preventing possible transmission risks.
According to him, proper medical waste management remains a critical barrier against the spread of infectious diseases, protecting healthcare workers, patients, sanitation personnel, and the wider public.
“Although there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Lagos or Nigeria, preparedness remains one of the most effective tools in disease prevention,” he said.
He further urged hospitals and licensed medical waste operators to strictly comply with approved safety and disposal guidelines, reinforcing infection prevention and control standards across health facilities.
LAWMA noted that maintaining high-level environmental hygiene and safe waste handling practices is essential in safeguarding Lagos against potential outbreaks and ensuring the resilience of the public health system.
